Given that neither Boro or Newcastle are going to catch us, I think we should celebrate the achievements of a club or our size being in the Premier league for 9 seasons. Whether you like the quality of the football or not, it is a fantastic achievement given where we were 20 years ago and some of the clubs that haven't managed to stay in the Prem for that period of time.

I'll celebrate with you when the mathematics are sound, even though the chances are looking slim to none.

The lowest we can finish now is 18th, so we're definitely safe in my opinion.

We only need 1 point and for either Boro or Newcastle to win all their games to go down, which they won't do, so yeah we're safe. Obviously there's a slight doubt in the back of my mind because we're not mathematically there yet but I'm a lot more comfortable than I was a few weeks ago.

Tis much better than our status last year with 3 to play or with 2 to play.  Only when we had one to play we could breathe easily (we had a 9 point GD in our favor even if we lost... which we did not against Chelski).

Massive achievement when you look at teams who have been up and down in that time:

Sunderland
Ipswich
West Ham
Southampton
Leeds
Birmingham
Wolves
Reading
Charlton
Norwich
West Brom

Probably more which I can't think of now. Hell, we could be throwing in Newcastle this year!

Arguments could suggest they're all bigger clubs than us, so yes credit to all those involved with the club in the last decade. The promotion was fantastic and every season since then has had a story. In fact, this season is probably the dullest of the lot in terms of barely anything to play for in the last four games.

In fact, it would be nice to see a record of Premier League/top flight survival.

I've had a quick look at the 2001 standings and the teams that are there who aren't here now or have been relegated and promoted since are:

Arsenal
Aston Villa
Chelsea
Everton
Liverpool
Manchester United
Middlesborough
Newcastle
Spurs

Seeing us become the tenth longest serving top flight side right now (alongside Blackburn and Fulham, obviously). We could be eighth by the end of this season. Realistically, I can't see us getting higher than eighth unless we stay in the Premiership for at least another decade. It will take something quite big for one of those clubs to capitulate, even though Spurs and particular Everton have tried their hardest in the past. Quite a nice little stat to have under our belts though.

If Newcastle and Middlesbrough draw then we are safe as well - but of course we will have beaten Sunderland by then anyway!

The nine years is a great achievement. I grew up with my Dad telling me how Bolton had always been a top team in the top division. Of course I saw us in all the lower divisions with an occasional flirt with the top. So this consolidated period is just fantastic - now if we could just win a trophy. League or FA cup would do nicely!

It doesn't seem like nine years since I was screaming "please" as Michael Ricketts was put through clean on the Preston goal. My heart needed a respite from the constant pounding it had taken since Gareth Farrelly had put us ahead. The relief was immeasuarble - with Ricardo making it look easy a minute or two later.

Happy memories.

I've been a little bit ill recently and cheered myself up by watching the great wins on Youtube - Preston, Reading, Hull etc.

It's just a pity that nobody seems to have Robbie Savage at Wrexham. It would really aid my recovery totally to that again. All we have is Dave Higson's wonderful end of match commentary.

Happy Days indeed. When you look at the facts as everyone has put it in this thread, it really is a fantastic achievement to be live and kicking in the Premier League for a 9th consecutive season.

And as for Preston at Cardiff, Ricketts et al and Dave 'Ding Dong Do' Higson. Thanks for memories boys, I'm still smiling now...! :dude::D

And where we are today, is largely due to Big Sam.

Wherever he goes, he will always have my repect as the manager who got us up through the play offs, and kept us up, which doesn't happen an awful lot, then fired us up table to Europe.

Now here is a funny thing, my boy is 10 and yesterday he was at his mates Football party for his 10th birthday and the lads all there in their kits, my boy as a Wanderer three Chelsea fans, three manure fans, two arsenal fans and a Saints fan. in the back of my mind I had been thinking my lad will get heaps for being in his Wanderers shirt, but of course they gave it to the Saints fan whilst throwing their party food around..

Then there was banter about Bolton which made me laugh, then Sam the birthday boy said at least they have always been in the Prem. I was about to step in and let them know the agony of being a Bolton fan, when I realised for these kids it was true practically for their entire memory span we have been in the top flight, quick everybody be rude to the Saints fan...

Couldnt agree more with the sentiments of this whole thread - its a fantastic achievement.

Big Sam was inspirational in taking Bolton to new levels but it shouldnt be forgotten how much work was done by the Riochs and todds before him.

We should also give a lot of credit to Phil Gartside and the board who gave us the new stadium which played such a big pat in our resurgance. Its easy to have a pop at him whenever things seem poor but they have done so much for the club. Well done and thanks Phil et al.  :winker:

Big Sam is gone and we're still in the prem. I think the board need the most credit. They appointed Sam and, OK, they made a mistake with LSL but you can understand why they did it. I don't think we'd be much better off than we are with Sam still in charge.

Still credit where it's due and he was a great manager during his time here and we shouldn't forget that.

I agree. You can't praise SA without also praising the board, who all through his time at the club, insisted that even if relegated, he would NOT be sacked. That must have taken an enormous amount of pressure off Sam? Such a chairman is a very rare quality indeed, expecially in the PL.

It also looks as though we will improve on last season. Most of us would have had o complaints at all about finishing where we currently are.

well done to all....past and present!!

Well said Andy. I have my issues with Gartside, never liked the guy, think he has an agenda which see's him eventually at the top of the FA. However 9 seasons in the premiership after 20 years in the wilderness of division 3 and division 4 is something I never dreamed of when I was at school during our darkest days. Selling a corner of the ground to a supermarket to stop us going under and 4000 on for midweek games against Leyton Orient seem a long time ago now. Gartside deserves his credit for his part in it.

For me Rioch woke the sleeping giant, Todd had a good spell and Allardyce will go down in history as the man who got us to europe twice from the bottom of division one.

Now he-who-shall-not-be-named must get his share of the credit, it's hard staying in this division and he will hopefully have managed to keep us here twice on the spin now. Look where we were when he came in, anchored to the bottom with 5 points on the board and forced to sell his top scorer in January. He is negative, his tactics do baffle at times but credit where credit's due. We are never going to challenge the top 4, but maybe a decent cup run and mid table finish every season is good enough, it is for me. I'll bet Southampton and Charlton fans would swap, I remember not so long ago Charlton fans complaining on 909 about Curbishley not be able to take them to the next step of europe? Bet they're gutted now.....

IMHO it started when the board gave the Manager's job to Phil Neal, now expecting to get panned for this but that was the first time (since Ian Greaves) that the board appeared to have ambition and a plan. Okay so it did not fully work out but much of the work done by the Club and Phil Neal was the base for our relative success...

I remember hearing of the appointment on the local radio and thinking must be a wind up, sounds too much like a forward step to be a reallity..

Sorry Zippy but i must intervene in this public panning session!

IMO, Phil Neal was the catalyst of the clubs revival / was certainly there when we hit rock bottom and the only way was up! (delete as you see fit!) I was in 6th Form Economics class when the news broke and couldnt believe that someone with his stature in the game was coming to Bolton.

To be even handed I dont think he was a great manager and i mainly remember his 'curling' balls up the wing, but things did begin to turn around for the club under his guidance.

There havent been many people that i can think of (maybe Roy McFarland) that have been at the club since Phil Neal that havent had a positive impact on our fortunes. I think even LSL was an asset to the club up until being made manager!

Different strokes:

I had the grave misfortune to come across "yes boss" Neal at Dunscar golf club on the wanderers day off after they had got to Wembley for sherpa van trophy.

he was one of the most arrogant opinionated sarcastic excuses for a mangaer/human I'd come across;taking the pi@@ out of players etc. a real big I am.

I didn't watch them again whilst under His "management"

His abilities were revealed in the ill fated turnip taylor documentary.

where is he now?

To be honest I think you are right - he never came over all that well to me and i certainly didnt think he was good in the England role although after the Paorama prohramme on Big Sam and BWFC i tend to believe that they portray anyone to suit their own ends.

Putting aside any like or dislike for the guy and his personal traits, maybe it did need someone with a thick skin to go in there and do a job when things were at their worst?

When I was 16 a friend of mine got Phil Neal's autograph.

I swear to you it read "Pin Head"

That's what he's been called amongst my mates ever since.

Well barring a pure miracle from the point of view of the teams below us, we're now completely safe!

So... who were the ones writing off West Brom eh, 3 points off 17th, Hull could be, and in my opinion are most likely to, finish bottom!

I was actually thinking whilst watching the play-offs last night, when we came up in 3rd via the playoffs last time round the 3 teams that went up stayed up and we're all still here in us, Fulham and Blackburn. That surely was the strongest 3 ever to be promoted to the prem. That is when the gap appeared between the Championship and premier league, when the 3 teams that season went up.

It'll be interesting when one of us go back down as were still are fairly equal over what we have done over the last 9 years, us slightly getting the best of it with the top 8 finishes for 4 seasons.

Two European jaunts - did quite well in both...

Marseille, Bayern Munich...

Cup final (albeit Carling cup)...

Consecutive top half finishes...

Players such ad JJ, Hierro, Campo, Anelka

God I wish I played "free flowing" football at the bottom of the table. Everyone loves a tryer. If you were 15th the media would be panning you for daring to help relegate Newcastle.
