LONDON 2012
Some 700,000 Olympics tickets remain unsold 10 days before the flame is lit:

250,000 football tickets currently on sale.

50,000 tickets for other sports, also currently on sale.

200,000 football tickets and 200,000 other sport tickets returned by National Olympic Committees, which are due to go on sale.

Organisers said there had been around one million football tickets left but these have been cut in half by reducing capacity at stadiums.

must admit I did have a look at the old trafford games on sunday 29th... then remembered I'm at kendal calling that weekend..

thing is, the ticket prices seem a bit excessive?

think theres still some quarter final tickets going for the football ( or was at the weekend)..

I can only assume the price of the football tickets is what has put people off?

Price and whether it matters.  For the athletes the Olympics is the number 1 career goal.  That's not the same for some of the team sports and particularly the same for football where the career goals are:

Team in various competitions
World Cup
Regional champsionship

Olympics is well down the list for both fans and players.   A friend of mine is going as much to visit Old Trafford for cheaper than a Man U game as to see the football.

As the Olympic torch continues to make its way to London for the 2012 games, a myriad of famous people have had the privilege to carry it as it gets closer to lighting the fire and starting the games. Fabrice Muamba will join those ranks as he carries the Olympic torch tomorrow through the London borough of Waltham Forest, according to Reuters.

The Opening Ceremony hasn't even started yet, and already :-

According to Sky Sports :

Nine track and field athletes have been suspended for doping offences ahead of the London Olympics.

Among them are three who were caught in re-tests of samples from last year's world championships.

The sport's governing body said six were caught in biological passport tests, which measure changes in an athlete's blood profile.

The others were caught in retroactive testing from the championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Eight of the athletes have received two-year suspensions and one drew a four-year ban.

The IAAF characterised the cases as "sophisticated doping", including one involving human growth hormone and two tied to synthetic testosterone.

IAAF president Lamine Diack says the announcement shows that track authorities will "do everything in our power to eradicate cheating".

Believe it or Not, I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony last night, and thought we put on a good show, even if some might say, probably a bit over British...

Normally don't bother watching it, but being our first olympics since 1948, thought I would see how we faired.

Now the hype is over, probably just cycling, field and track are on my agenda, over the next couple of weeks.

"Lets just hope our athletes can put Great Britain back on the Map as a Sporting Nation"...

The olympic ceremony was certainly visionary, and made very few concessions to those who didn't share Boyle' vision (I think Mr. Bean instead of the Clangers was about it).  General reviews seem to be split;
Brits: Amazing.
The rest of the world: What the hell was that all about?  James Bond was funny though.
Everyone: The Queen looked bored.

And no wonder Mitt Romney had to come out early and criticise the games.  The whole NHS bit - using the Olympics to promote tax-funded; state-provided; free at point of use healthcare - could have been a re-election advert for Obama.

The "forging of the ring" and the cauldron were truly stunning.

I know what you are saying Frankie..

The majority of our medals though, tend to be gained in what I class as minor sports, that is shooting, archery, sailing, diving, rowing, equestrian etc. (since I do not watch them), although it does not mean that others don't..

I know that these sports people have put in a lot of time and hard work to get where they are, but I have always classed track and field as the main competition.

I also know that Great Britain is expecting to gain around 90+ medals, with hopefully around 20 Gold, so with the size of the Country compared to some, it will be good..

I assume about the result. If so, its simply because we are TOO GOOD!!! Cavendish is that good at sprinting its counting against him. 4 stage wins on the Tour de France.

BRONZE MEDAL - Great Britain (Men's team gymnastics)

Colin Murray on BBC Radio 5 live: "Unless you have had a telegram from the Queen you have never witnessed a GB medal in the men's team event."

Personally thought Federer wasn't bothered.

In the above remark, I am not knocking Murray, but am glad about another Gold for Team GB

When one player plays very well, they can make the other look poor. Federer had made it known that he really wanted to win a gold medal for his country.

4 golds for Ben Ainslie.......hope he gets some recognition for that.

I don't like the rule that sees athletes disqualified for one false start. They train for 4 years just for this. They are in a huge stadium in the Olympic games and they are hanging on for the gun. We've had no high profile athletes fall foul of it yet, but it doesn't matter. It's a really harsh rule.
