How good was that programme. Happy 70th Ali. Greatest sporting Icon of the 20th Century?
How about we name a top 5 in order?
1. Ali
2. Senna
3. Pele
4. Babe Ruth
5. Pete Sampras
Just a list to get us going.

| of corse, Michael Jordan! Sachin, Tiger and Federer though had their peaks after the 20th Century though? hence why i didn't name them and went with Sampras, though Jordan could easily replace him. Last edited on Tue Jan 17th, 2012 02:16 am by Liam

Michael Jordan would move into my top 5 could have really had him in there at first but just thought up a list quickly as it was late on.

I can't really call someone iconic because he had his name on some famous trainers. Probably did something else, but nothing that I saw or cared about. If we're going for US sport, what about OJ Simpson? He was, er, iconic.

Jordan did a lot more than put his name to some trainers.
he revolutionised basketball.

Yes, I was joking, of course. What I really meant was that I don't think basketball is globally significant enough to have one of the 20th century icons.
When did Tiger Woods break through? Carl Lewis is a good shout I think. Johnathan Edwards. Dick Fosbury.
Bannister is a good one, where are the women though? I had Navratilova, as her Grand Slam record is about 60 wins all in all for double and singles, putting her way ahead of Sampras.
But generally I think of athletics, as it's the real test of performance. In fact, I find it hard to think of people in team sports who would go in.

| Tiger broke through in 1997 i believe, but still, his peak was about the millennium, and still, he was brilliant but Jack Niclaus maybe was the golfer of the 20th century?
