| Anyone seen this yet? I'm thinking of going as I enjoyed Sin City which was also an adaptation of a Frank Miller graphic novel

Having studied this era many years ago at school and uni I may well go but I'm not expecting much historical accuracy, more a gratuitous gore-fest judging by a book I was looking at in "Borders" yesterday. The 'tree of death' looks particularly gruesome. In some ways I reckon the gore-fest angle is a lot nearer the truth than the 1962 film, though I suspect that was a little more accurate overall. Perhaps he could go for a trilogy and do "Salamis" and "Plataea" to complete the story.

A fantastic book on this era is 'Persian Fire' by Tom Holland. It's a really well written and fantastically paced history book. Did you know that part of being a Spartan was to have been involved in institutional paedophilia?
Just read his other book about the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Empire. Called 'Rubicon'.

When I was studied this era at school (late 60s early 70s) that was glossed over, not surprisingly. Without going into any detail their concepts of homosexuality and paedophilia and the physical aspects pertaining to that were different to ours.
I never find it wise to judge ancient civilisations by late 20th/early 21st century values.

the series about how pornography developed is amazing.... all the finds from pompeii included some quite "racy" stuff.. heaven forbid the masses should see this,, and be inflamed!
so they hid it away .
the ludicrousness even spread to victorian lunatics scratching off hyroglyphs in egypt that were "offensive" to them..
madness

Saw it last night. Good fun if a little over the top. Gerard Butler is excellent as Leonidas (the bloke they named the chocolate shop after) and Xerces is is camp as anything. Very stylish cartoony violence, but not sure it adds much to the history.
