Just been talking to a colleague about drinkign habits.
Neither of us are the go out with the intention to get completely wasted type of people and can't understand why people do. Yesterday a friend of mine went on a pub crawl for a mates birthday starting at 11am, so id imagine they were quite drunk by the end of the day, but my mate was still able to seend cohereent texts at 10.30 last night, but that i can understand, its going out for the day and as long as you pace yourselve sensibly would be a fun day out. But when people go out of an evenign to just get wasted and will drink anythign as long as its strongly alcoholic i just dont get it!!!
can anyone explain it to me???

yeah it's good fun.
Maybe our Swedish friend can explain a bit more, but my understanding is that Swedes don't go out just for a drink, what's the point in that - they go out to get shedded! And good one them

i've done "all dayers" in the past,, you just slow right down after the first few quick 'uns.
the problem with going out in the night, is that mainly you cant' talk ( it's too loud) and you can't sit down ( no room) , so you've got yer drink in yer hand..... so it gets drunk. and even now,, you think "blimey it's only 90 mins till closing, i'll have to get this one down,, then move on"
also the bars seem to prefer this,, because they want you in/out as fast as possible. not really in there interest for you to take ages over a drink is it
if you're drinking during the day,, you tend to find its just so much easier to take a slower pace...................
hmm, that reminds me,, really should go on an all-dayer with the lads,, it's so much fun

you can drink all day and still not fall over and puke, The two aren't incompatible (ie stay upright and leo sayer). I enjoy the occassional all dayer, it's good fun. One of the best times I had on a sesh was the circle line bar crawl, that was ace

You need to understand the eternal optimism of the drunk. Once you get to the comfortably numb stage, the idea that you will feel bad at some point doesn't occur to you. Of course if you stop drinking, you begin to sober up. This is not good.
Skilled inebriates get to the happy stage and then apply small top ups to remain there. It takes many years of practice to be this good.

Its really not hard! I can get to the point where i know i shouldnt have any more, so i stop and start on the soft stuff, then if i feel like i can take another drink later i have one! or i am just some kind of freak that that is so easy to me???

No, your approach is entirely sensible, but judging by the increasing numbers of binge drinkers, it's not one that's shared by many others.
One thing I have noticed, is how significant the first drink is. It takes alcohol about half an hour to get into the bloodstream. If during that period you take it easy, then you'll have a more civilised evening. The trouble is, with a lot of people, by that time they've had two or three drinks and the damage is already done.

I hadn't heard of binge drinking until maybe a couple of years ago. My first thoughts were that it must refer to the kind of people who go out, get smashed in record time, behave badly and wake up in a gutter somewhere. At least that's what any visuals supplied by the media suggested.
But then I read that, for a male to binge drink, all he needed to do was drink 4 pints of beer. So, that apparently means I join these social misfits every time I have a quiet couple of hours down the pub... This leaves me a little confused: after 4 pints I don't feel any more inclined to behave in a loutish way, I can still remember where I live, and if anything I'm more chatty and sociable. Not only that, I've not suddenly changed my behaviour over the past few years, my drinking habits are pretty much the same as eleven/twelve years ago when I first started drinking. And on top of all this, the generations senior to me all regard it as normal to drink 4 pints or more on an evening down the pub. And none of them go out looking for trouble either.
So, what is meant by this 'increase' in binge drinking? It's portrayed as an increase in anti-social behaviour, but defined to include, from my experience, normal social behaviour. Which stops me from having any concerns that there is a problem, and makes me question how this 'increase' has been calculated.

Rover the Top - Totally Agree with all you have stated and that in most cases it is "normal behaviour", IMO I think that the "binge" thing has come into effect over the past few years when the troublesome yobs of a couple of years ago have now reached drinking age - they didn't have normal behaviour then and after a few drinks don't have normal behaviour now.
In the meantime will meet you in the Pub over a couple of beers and they can serve us ASBO's after all we are only behaving normal In fact lets all turn up and have a Banter Binge.

What do you drink? One of the problems has been the increase in strong lagers and even bitters. Traditionally everyone would go out and drink 3.5% "cooking" beer. Now people much prefer the stronger 5% lagers. Clearly there's nearly half as much alcohol, so under that 4 pints of premium is the equivalent of nearly 6 of ordinary.
Additionally with premium lagers you can get the stella effect; where the chemicals used in brewing combine with the alcohol to turn certain people a bit mad which is why Stella is known as "wife-beater" (with bitters the effect is likely to be hangover inducing).
With wine there's the question of how big's a glass. Served at dinner from a bottle is usually 100ml-150 ml (6-8 glasses per bottle). A small glass in a pub is 150ml, usually 175 while a large glass is either 250ml (1/3 bottle) or even 375 ml (1/2 bottle).
Finally there's the issue of doubles. When we went metric, the old measure - the gill - was replace everywhere with a 25ml measure. However, that's much smaller than the old gill and nowhere near enough for a drink. So people switched to doubles - 50ml which is about 1-and-a-half times as much (as with premium vs cooking lager).
However, many bars have since moved to the 35ml measure (closer to the old gill) but people still automatically order doubles.
So all of a sudden, going out for 4 is a bigger proposition.

Used to call Stella or 1664 " fighting larger " because of the way people "seemed' to react after 5 or so pints
German beer purity or Reinheitsgebot .. no chemicals in the Pils over here ... but still

cooking?
surely its called "session" beer,,, with good reason!
still, i will add that i do drink a lot faster/more when out and cant' sit down / talk etc...... the bars in town just seem happy for people to be in/out as fast as possible, with the expected results........

OK, I'll restate that since a 'pint' obviously varies in strength depending on what you're drinking... 'binge drinking' is defined as 8 units in one session, which is roughly 4 pints of the normal strength bitters I drink on a night out. If you want to argue that it's actually 4 1/2 pints, I'm not bothered. It's probably only three pints of the stronger stuff. The point I'm trying to make is that plenty of people can go out, drink a reasonable amount of alcohol, and still behave like civilised human beings. The media talk about binge drinking being a problem, but do they mean everyone who drinks is a problem, or just those who get out of control? The two are seperate things to my mind, but defining 'binge drinking' as consuming a fixed amount of alcohol blurs them together.

That's why bars play loud music and make you stand! Drink more; buy more; pay more. There's even a name for it: high volume vertical drinking.

The problem is the amount of trouble we're brewing up (quite literally) for the future.
Lung and heart disease (caused by smoking) will be overtaken by liver and kidney disease. The trends are already there and are being monitored by the NHS. Just like smoking, we're storing up problems for old age.
There are a high number of babies being born that have suffered with too much alcohol being drunk by their mums. Links have been made with a huge number of learning difficulties.
Not that it stops me from having a decent session now and then but if you're overdoing it now, expect problems in the future.
